NAYOP stands for Native American Youth Outreach Program, and was created by the Community Arts Partnership between the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) of Santa Fe, the Denver Art Museum and the Denver Indian Center. The NAYOP sponsors a three-week intensive Summer Arts Institute in June to introduce American Indian youth to new art techniques, build leadership skills, and have fun in a culturally appropiate environment.
The students range in age from 13-18 years old and focus in one out of seven areas: Drawing, Painting and Murals; Photography; Videography; Pottery; Traditional Drumming, Singing and Contemporary Music; Storytelling or Traditional Techniques. The program provides mentoring by noted American Indian Artist, many of whom are IAIA Alumni or current faculty, and current and recent IAIA students. The work created in the Institute is an expression of their culture and creative spirit.
The Summer Arts Institute will be conducting classes June 13th - June 29th, 2001. Classes are held Monday - Friday, 8:30 - 4:30.
On June 12th there will be a meeting for students and their families to introduce them to the program and the staff. Location will be determined.
