New Center North Neighbors

Lights and Locks

May 20, 2004

The Central Empowerment Zone Community Policing Program (CPP) is on a mission to Light Up and Lock Down homes in the 13th precinct. The vision being to lower the incidence of criminal activity and create safer communities. To date, we have had over 70 residents sign up.

As part of the program you receive a lawn light, a motion sensor light, dead-bolt lock, and a carbon monoxide detector. To qualify you must attend an hour training session on how citizens can work together to prevent crime. Prior to the installation of the lights and locks you will receive a home security assessment and inspection to assure that you are doing everything to maintain the security of your home.

Lights and Locks began with homes in the Central Empowerment Zone. Funding for Empowerment Zone residents come from that program. Unfortunately, New Center North Neighbors residents do not reside in the Empowerment Zone. Funding for our residents must be found elsewhere.

NCNN received an Allstate Insurance Safe Block Grant for 21 homes. The CPP selected a block on three streets?—Taylor, Gladstone and Hazelwood. Due to the season, all work may not be completed until the Spring of 2004.

NOTE: When NCNN was approached about participating in this program, it was not explained that funding for our residents had not been secured. NCNN has been assured by the CPP staff that funding for everyone who wants to participate in this program will be available when they start up in the Spring of 2004. We will keep you posted.
