Not too long ago, our area was ranchland. When a developer purchased the land, he had it zoned commercial. But, when builders were looking for land to build homes, the developer went back to the city and asked that nearly all the land be zoned residential. The portion near the middle was to become the intersection of Woodmen and Austin Bluffs, and that section remained commercial.
Since the early 1970s, and maybe before, our city leaders have been talking about building additional freeways in Colorado Springs. However, while they kept talking, people kept coming, and every place they "planned" to have a freeway has lots of homes today! In 1974 everyone was sure the little road called Powers would become an expressway! Today there are dozens of businesses there. Those of us who have lived in other cities may be able to make some great suggestions to our city leaders.
We are extremely fortunate that there are already some very successful neighborhood associations in Colorado Springs. Even better, there is a "central clearinghouse" for neighborhood associations that has been around for quite a while, and has some great leadership. Known as CONO, you can find information about this group at:

So, we are not out here alone! We have some informed and helpful leaders close by. Please consider becoming active in NHN, the Neighbors of Newport Heights. Even if you don't have much spare time, you can always find a moment to send questions and suggestions to Dody VerSluis at ddversluis@Yahoo.com

Sometimes a new bride does not take care of the dishes right after dinner ... but she soon learns it is a much more difficult job later! Most things in our lives are like doing the dishes! When we take care of the small problems, they do not become big problems. We are fortunate to live in a wonderful new neighborhood in a wonderful city ... but if we don't take care of it, it just won't remain the wonderful place we want it to be.
We are fortunate to have a wonderful mixture of people in our neighborhood, with varied talents. Please don't wait for someone to ask you to help! Just jump in and volunteer! We need to get organized. If you have had any experience volunteering with neighborhood associations, and you can spare some time for this one, please send an e-mail to Dody VerSluis.
If you don't have time right now to volunteer your services, please feel free to send suggestions or questions! It's all about neighbors helping neighbors.
