The Society is a non-profit institution organized ''to study, collect and preserve historical records, traditions, and relics relating to the history of North Attleborough and its people.... To interest and unite the townspeople in a finer public spirit and a better social order through a fuller understanding of the traditions and history of the community.''
Twenty-one citizens of North Attleborough met on November 15, 1927 to complete the arrangements for the organization of the North Attleborough Historical Society. Rev. George E. Osgood of Grace Episcopal Church was elected as the first president of the Society and Dr. N. C. Bullard was appointed the first curator.
For five years, meetings were held in various places in the center of town. In 1932, Mrs. Ellen Mason bequeathed the Society a late Victorian house on South Washington Street. William Smith, a local jewelry manufacturer, built the house in 1886. On September 27, 1932, the Society held its first meeting in its new home on South Washington Street.
