Crash due to ''noise abatement''

editorial by Bill Mulcahy
As Bill Sees It: (Editorial) Rockaway Crash Shows No Community Is Safe From Aviation's Flying Bombs!!! The crash on Monday of the American Airlines Flight 587 in the Belle Harbor section of Rockaway shows that even affluent communities near airports can have a fully-fueled jumbo jet crash on their homes. The crash killed 260 people on the plane and five on the ground! A good friend of mine, who lives only a block from the crash, said his nephew and family were nearly killed when a large section of the plane fell on their house!!! The Belle Harbor community only gets a fraction of the aircraft noise that many other, poorer, Rockawayites get, but they now know that they share equally in the crash potential. Hopefully now they will become a louder voice in opposition to JFK Airport expansion then they have been in the past. Editor's Note: SAFE president, Dr. Frans Verhagen and myself were quoted in today's N.Y. Post story (see at:) New York Post

Did A ''Noise Abatement
Climb Contribute To The Crash? I heard one pilot say he felt that a steep
''noise abatement'' climb combined with ''wake turbulence'' might have
contributed to the increased stress on the Flight 587's tailfin and rudder.

Cockpit Voice Recorder Tape Secrecy Again! How come a cockpit voice recorder tapes is the only evidence of a major disaster that is mandated by law to be kept secret, only to be listened to by a specially selected few? The Aviation Cabal says they want to protect the families of the crew from hearing the last moments of their love ones. However, I believe the real reason is to limit public relations damage, cover up mistakes and reduce liability payments to their victims. As the Airbus 300 plane had the most advanced Flight Data Recorder (FDR) which records hundred parameters of information, the exact cause of the crash should be determined quickly.

Read About The Crash From A Rockaway Newspaper: I thought some may be interested in reading the local newspaper of Rockaway, which never
criticizes JFK Airport, as long as the planes fly high enough over the affluent Rockaway communities. Since the crash however, the ''Wave'' seems to have changed its tune. Now the editor, who regularly derides those who have long fought JFK Airport unjust routing policies, expansion and environmental impacts as being only concerned only about saving ''the seagulls'' (from being hit by planes), thinks the FAA should ''move the flight pattern's'' away from certain (you can guess which ones) communities. It is really sad to see a
newspaper that could be positive force controlled by ignorant people who are more interested in maintaining political power and control by their own ''clique'' than the general welfare of the people of Rockaway. Read this week's editorial at: Editorial

Rockaway Beach Resident Demands FAA Change Routing: While Monday's crash was terrible, it could have been much worse if the plane had hit one of the 14 story apartment houses in another section of Rockaway where the planes fly over more frequently. A resident there demands the FAA change the flight path. Read her letter to the editor at: Rockwave.

Turbulence Rocked plane...

Turbulence rocked plane before fatal dive: an analysis of the plane's flight
data recorder shows that during the three minutes before the jetliner plunged to the ground, it experienced two wake encounters and took ''a very significant lateral acceleration,'' said Marion Blakey, chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board. Editor's Note: JFK Airport was one of the five airports which had its ''High Density Rule'' removed last year in order to allow more planes to takeoff and land during busy times. I, and many others, complained that this would decrease safety. The FAA, of course, rejected that analysis. NY POST and Herald and Newsday
Noisy Airplane Overhead?

Call 207-3471
To report any airplane noise.

State your name, street you live on, what type of plane, if you know it, and what made you aware of the noise, ie: you couldn't hear the TV, you were mowing the lawn and heard the plane, it awoke you from your sleep, etc.

I guess I'm just an opportunist. I don't need an alarm clock anymore. I use the FedEx flight at 5:55 a.m. to wake me up.

Call in those complaints!
