Commissioner Dewey R. Stokes, along with fellow Commissioners Arlene Shoemaker and Mary Jo Kilroy, serves as the administrative head of Franklin County Government. Together the Board manages almost $1.2 billion in county funds, more than 130 county-owned buildings and serves as the county?’s sole contracting and taxing authority.
Stokes, elected Commissioner in 1994, is a former President of the National Fraternal Order of Police, an organization representing more than 250,000 law enforcement members nationwide. Before his term as FOP President, Stokes served more than 26 years as a Police Officer for the Columbus Division of Police. In 1993, he received the America?’s Star Award from the U.S. Marshal?’s Association for his career in law enforcement and contributions to the profession.
As Commissioner, Stokes uses his background in law enforcement and public service to promote partnerships that work to improve the lives of Franklin County residents. To that end, Stokes has strongly supported OSU Extension Franklin County and its mission to provide educational opportunities to communities throughout Franklin County.
Over the years, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners?’ partnership with OSU Extension Franklin County has helped create programs like ?“Becoming a Child Care Provider?” and the ?“Senior Series,?” which strive to prepare individuals for success in life, in family and in work. These programs and others contribute to the Commissioners?’ ongoing commitment to provide equal access to education, health care and social programs, which give Franklin County residents every opportunity to succeed in life. With continued financial support from the Franklin County Commissioners, OSU Extension Franklin County will be able to continue to develop innovative and effective education programs that work to enhance the quality of life for many of Franklin County?’s residents.
