Old Salem ~ Meredith Neighborhood Association (OSMNA)

ABOUT OUR NEIGHBORHOOD: OLD SALEM

OS1.jpg

Old Salem homes were constructed in the 70's and are mostly brick, single family residences of several different styles. All homes have large old tree shaded, attractive yards and are well maintained. It is centrally located to just about everywhere in Charlotte. This is an established neighborhood with good neighbors and an active Neighborhood Association. We are assigned to the desireable (yellow) school choice zone.

ABOUT OUR NEIGHBORHOOD: MEREDITH

M1.jpg

Meredith homes were built in the late 80's and are mostly attractive frame homes with very nice yards. This is a secluded subdivision and great for kids and younger families.

Old Salem and Meredith are joined geographically as well as through our mutual Neighborhood Association. We are proud of our very attractive upper middle class neighborhoods. We work hard to protect our property values and insure a peaceful, safe and enjoyable lifestyle.

About our OSMNA Association

History

Old Salem Neighborhood Association was re-organized in 1987 by a consensus of the residents. Since then, the major concerns of the Association have been neighborhood safety, maintenance of property appearance, resale value, crime prevention and social activities. Several notable accomplishments include: installation of speed bumps to slow and deter traffic on East Barden Rd., installation of decorative street lighting for the entire neighborhood, new sidewalks on East Barden Road for pedestrian safety, the design and installation of a new sign for our Providence Road entrance, lighting of our Entrance Island, and more. In past years, we’ve been fortunate to have a strong association tackle such key neighborhood issues as: leading the successful fight against rezoning of property adjacent to Old Salem, the installation of stop signs and the implementation of the neighborhood Crime Watch program with the Charlotte City Police.

In 2002 the Meredith neighborhood and the Old Salem Neighborhood Association decided to join forces in a single, larger, and much stronger association - Old Salem - Meredith Neighborhood Association (OSMNA).

In 2004, after several years of hard work, we were able to have our Neighborhoods moved into the "yellow" School Choice Zone along with neighboring Woodbridge. This is, for many reasons, a very positive improvement for our neighborhoods and reinforces the value of a strong Neighbor Association

General Meeting Dates and Location

General membership meetings, usually held quarterly, are open to all members of the Association and newcomers and serve as an information forum where ideas about neighborhood projects and concerns can be discussed. Frequently we will invite City Council, Police or other visitors to help inform us of issues concerning our neighborhood. Your participation is encouraged and your ideas about meeting topics are welcome. Please direct them to your Block Captain or any Officer who will see that your ideas are heard.

Notice of these general meetings is distributed by Newsletter and neighborhood signs. All efforts will be made to announce these meetings well in advance of scheduled dates.  Meetings are informal and relaxed, held (usually) in the early evening, with refreshments provided. For special meetings, baby sitting may be provided and is announced in advance.

Association Board Officers

Officers are nominated annually for a May to April term.  The election is finalized via email votes and at the April/May neighborhood meeting by a majority vote of the general membership in attendance. Officers assume their duties on May 1. Any current dues paying family member (age 21 or over) is eligible to hold office. Each household has one vote.

Committees and Coordinators

The OS/M Neighborhood Association operates with “Block Captains” representing the individual block areas within the two neighborhoods. These individuals are your link to OS/MNA Executive Board. Block Captains are especially important in fulfilling the requirements for continuing our active Crime Watch status, welcoming new neighbors on their blocks and finalizing our annual membership drive.

As needed, the OS/MNA forms committees to address special interests or concerns of the OS/MNA membership. Coordinators are those who graciously volunteer to oversee a particular area or project of importance to our Association. They may have the support of committees, or may operate independently. We currently have Coordinators for Social Activities, Entrance Island Maintenance, Yard of the Month, Welcome and Crime Watch.

Crime Watch

Old Salem/Meredith is an active member of Charlotte’s Neighborhood Crime Watch. OSMNA members are encouraged to engrave their valuables with an identification number (usually a North Carolina Driver’s License #). Your Association has electric engravers that you may borrow. We recommend you do this! Call the Crime Watch Coordinator to borrow one and get your sticker. Our Crime Watch Coordinator also shares information and tips to help protect you and your property and issues crime warnings when needed.

Membership Dues

Dues are assessed annually (May to April) and cover family membership in the Association for one year. Membership dues for May 2010 - April 2011 are $30.00 and should be paid by May 1st.

New members dues will be pro-rated at $2.50 per month for each full month following the move in date (Number of months ____ X $2.50  =  Amount Due _____ ).

Dues are used for entrance island maintenance and lighting, neighborhood meetings and dinners, social activities, communications (printing, postage, etc.) and such other activities/projects as are decided by the Association Leadership for the benefit of our neighborhood.
