Speedway City became a town in 1926 and remains a town governed by a Town Manager, Town Council and Clerk-Treasurer. The boundaries for the original platted city were Main to Winton, 10th to 16th streets.
The original platted area, now a designated historic district, contains homes built mostly in the 1920s. During the 1940s another surge of houses were built in the historic district. Also houses were built in the 1940s and 1950s in other areas within the association boundaries. Finally, houses were built in the 1990s on the remaining vacant lots.
The majority of the homes are one-story bungalows of two to three bedrooms.
A variety of businesses can be found within the association boundaries. The upscale restaurant that opened in June 2006 along with the antique store, also opened in 2006, are examples of what the town is doing to revitalize Main Street.
Three churches, four restaurants, a pizza delivery, chicken carry-out, cleaners, gas station, trophy and clock shop, lawyer, doctor, pet groomer, antique mall, coin shop, flower shop, funeral home, three hair salons, barber shop, Speedway Town Press, United States Auto Club and Chase Bank are within walking distance of all association residents.
The Old Speedway City Neighborhood Association was formed in 1999. The association serves as a forum for discussion and solutions to neighborhood problems, working with the local government agencies.
In May 2007 the association was awarded the 2007 Neighborhood of the Year by the national organization Neighborhoods USA. This was a prestigious honor.
