Holidays in the Pearl
When people move to the Pearl District, they often leave two-, three-, or four-bedroom houses behind. And holiday plans and traditions are often changed to fit their new home.
I asked some residents how their move to the Pearl has changed their way of celebrating the holidays. One couple said they bought an artificial tree ?– something that sounded unthinkable before becoming a loft owner. Another woman said she placed a small potted tree on a table, mainly to bring the smell of pine into her loft. She decorates it with her ornaments that carry the most nostalgic history.
Lisa Belt, manager at World Cup Coffee works behind the counter on Christmas Day so her young baristas can spend the day with their families. Now that?’s the holiday spirit!
One lady commented that if it weren?’t for her holiday decorations she wouldn?’t need the extra storage space she rents!
Yes, loft or condo living does change things, but mostly for the better. After all, there?’s no need to go hiking in the malls to find just the right gift ?– we have everything right here!
Most holiday shopping can be accomplished within walking distance. Oblation Paper and Press has so many gift items it would be hard not to find something for everyone! And if you have family spread throughout the country, a Starbucks gift card is a great gift for most. And for those who prefer tea, there is an amazing selection of teas at the Tea Zone.
Restaurants in the Pearl District represent all dimensions of the globe. Tastes from Peru, China, Japan, Italy, Mexico and Greece may be purchased with gift certificates.
I am so vocal about how I love Portland that I am giving subscriptions to the ?“Portland Monthly?” magazine to my kids spread all over the U.S. You might like to drop in their office at NW Hoyt and 14th to order a subscription.
Carolers will be singing in the neighborhood the weeks of December 13 and 20. If you?’d like to join in the singing, call Hoyt Street Properties at 503-227-6677 for all of the details.
The Pearl District Neighborhood Association wishes you a very happy holiday season, and a wonderful New Year.
