Piedmont Heights Civic Association

A Brief History

After the Northeat Expressway was built in the 1950s, the community known as Piedmont Heights began to experience encroaching commercial development, rezoning and other problems related to Atlanta's growth.

An Organization Is Born

To combat these problems, a group of homeowners met at Rock Springs Presbyterian Church in the fall of 1956 to form a civic organization. At the first official meeting on October 12, 1956, a Board of Directors was elected and a chairman selected. The "Piedmont Civic Club" was born. Six years later a Charter of Corporation was granted by the Fulton County Superior Court. Thereafter, the Club was known as the Piedmont Heights Civic Club, Inc.

The annual meeting of the membership and a family picnic were the setting for the dedication of Monroe Park in May 1961. The new park was created from a parcel of land donated by Stein Printing Company to serve as a buffer zone between the residential and industrial areas at the end of Lebanon Drive and Gotham Way. The honoree, W.L. Monroe, was one of Piedmont Heights' earliest residents and the owner of Monroe's Nursery which prospered on the land now occupied by Ansley-Monroe Villas and several businesses near it from the 1940s. Now called Gotham Way Park, since the entrance is at the end of that street, the park is a popular place for neighbors to enjoy its open grassy field for play, picnics and exercise.

The goals of the Piedmont Heights Civic Association, as it is now called, since its inception have been to maintain a livable and desirable community. The PHCA provides a means for the expression of ideas, a liason between the community and government, and works to promote friendliness and cooperation among neighbors.
