WASHINGTON PARK EAST HISTORIC DESIGNATION UPDATE

Progress & Preservation . . . Together's long-term goal is to preserve and protect the character of Washington Park East. We have worked with the City over the last year to find tools to help preserve the character and ambiance of the neighborhood. While several beneficial zoning changes have taken place, they do not address many of the demolition or design issues that are impacting the character of East Washington Park. As a result, we are working on historic district designation. This is a long, expensive and work-intensive process. As a result, practical considerations require Washington Park East to be divided into three areas for potential historic designation as shown on the map. North of Exposition is an area in and of itself. The area east of Race is defined and impacted by the Old South Gaylord business district. The quadrant in the southwest area is attached to Washington Park and South High. This area will be the first proposed area for historic designation. Two additional potential districts are contemplated. Applications for the other two contemplated potential districts can be submitted separately and at a later date.
