In 1897, Psi Iota Xi was founded by 8 young ladies in Muncie, Indiana. These ladies will long be remembered for their gracious manner, deep concern, and modest and generous appreciation of the efforts and needs of others. Psi Iota Xi was the first Greek letter organization of its kind in Indiana. By1910 there were 10 chapters serving their communities. The sorority has grown to 138 chapters in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, and Illinois.
In over 100 years of existence, the women of Psi Iota Xi have contributed millions of dollars to philanthropic projects meeting needs in their communities and the nation, particularly in the areas of fine arts, music, literature and speech and hearing. We were the first women’s organization to support James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children starting 1922. In 1993, we voted to establish the Psi Iota Xi Professorship in Pediatric Speech and Hearing. This endowment is for faculty support at Riley Hospital.
1938 marked the beginning of Psi Iota Xi’s dedication to the field of Speech and Hearing. We first gave a $10,000 grant for a traveling speech screening clinic. In 1977 we began an association with the American Speech Hearing Association. Now gifts to speech and hearing are over $261,000.00 annually.
Since 1989, the members have donated over one million dollars each year. Many of the projects were at the local level funding scholarship, art work, and local speech and hearing clinics. Each chapter has complete freedom of choice as to its individual pursuits in meeting the needs in its community.
As members of Psi Iota Xi we are proud of our heritage for 100 years and beyond. This heritage also brings with it a great responsibility for our future. Psi Iota Xi will continue to search for and find areas of need in society. We will continue in the same spirit to protect and preserve the high standards that our founders established for us in l897.
