SENIOR ADVISORY COUNCIL PHILOSOPHY

The Senior Advisory Council supports and embodies the RAIN MISSION which is to provide an alternative to the institutionalization of the elderly. In the R.A.I.N. EASTCHESTER SENIOR CENTER CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS, The Preamble describes the goals and philosophy of a Senior Center as declared by the National Council on Aging:

"A Senior Center is a community focal point where older adults come together for services and activities that reflect their experiences and skills, respond to their diverse needs and interests, enhance their dignity, support their independence, and encourage their involvement in and with the Center and the community.

The Center also serves as a resource for the entire community for information on aging, support for family caregivers, training professional and lay leaders and students, and for development of innovative approaches for addressing issues relating to the seniors and the elderly population.

The philosophy of the senior center movement is based on these premises: that aging is part of the human developmental process; that human beings need peers with whom they can interact and who are available as a source of encouragement and support; and that adults have the right to a voice in determining matters in which they have a vital interest."

If you read this statement, please pass it along to your friends who may be looking for a way to participate in and contribute to community affairs.

Our local community consists of a variety of neighborhoods and community organizations, among which are: the Eastchester Gardens Tenants Association and Advisory Council, Concerned Parents of Eastchester Gardens, the Eastchester Gardens Community Center, the Gunhill Businessmen's Association and the Allerton Avenue Homeowners Association.
