Sweeting Estates is named after Dr. Harry Gladstone Sweeting, a Fort Lauderdale philanthropist who died of cancer in 1982. Harry Gladstone Sweeting moved from Miami in 1941 to his nine acres of waterfront wilderness on the North Fork. A world-traveler and self-styled "healer," the Bahamian was an ordained minister in the International Constitutional Temple before investing in south Florida real estate and operating a store on the corner of Northwest Second Street and Fifth Avenue. He believed his lush estate, known for its luxuriant vegetation, art, and jewel-toned peacocks were beneficial to spiritual rejuvenation.
The Sweeting neighborhood is bordered by Sistrunk Boulevard and the banks of the North Fork of the New River. A concentrated infill-housing program is underway and Bank of America has committed to building up to 50 single-family and townhouse units. Along the banks of the North Fork of the New River, Lennar Homes and Bob Young Builders have constructed 11 new single-family homes. With MoHomes contracted to build 11 more. The area has been master planned and the CRA is currently providing infrastructure upgrades, streetscape and landscaping improvements to enhance the area.
Retail and commercial development and a grocery store are also planned along the Sistrunk Boulevard corridor.
