Riverside Avondale Coalition comprises a comprehensive group of community organizations, RAP, Park & King Merchants, Five Points Association, RAMA (Riverside Avondale Ministerial Alliance) and local Elementary School and other interested neighborhood residents. The group sets its own meeting schedule. Over the past eight years this group has shared ideas and created a consensus of vision that has helped guide the various upgrades and improvements that the community has benefited from with cleaner and safer streets, improved lighting in the Park & King area and in the parks; encouraging new businesses, tree planting, an affordable housing project (RADO) and alley and street clean-ups.
There are four commercial areas; three of which are very active in the planning stages of proposed improvements to upgrade the streetscape. Five Points Area Merchants have plans to improve the diverse, artful area that makes up their section. Park and King Merchants are already into the second phase of their plans which include brick pavers that residents are encouraged to purchase as part of their support. This area now joins Avondale as having a wonderful selection of antique stores and small shopes set up in attractive bungalows along Park Street. The European Street Cafe, The Cool Moose are some of the good eateries. The area of Stockston street may soon see some new changes as well, since with the changes to the nearby major highway and the Fuller Warren Bridge, Stockston Street will become more of an entry into the historic district and there is general interest in improving this area. In the past "Take Pride in Riverside" gave this area a great deal of time and attention, by painting the Marybuilt Building and planting trees along Stockton Street from I-10 to Oak Street. The trees are mature and have made a great improvement to the streetscape. The Shoppes of Avondale, long an important attraction, continues to attract good restaurants and antigues stores.
Every resident is asked to join in whenever time will permit. There are a number of ongoing projects and committees that welcome your ideas and input. RAP, Park & King Merchants, Five Points Association, RADO and volunteers who care for the various parks all welcome help. There are also community wide project that occur like the RAP Art Festival, Luminaria at Christmas, the Home Tour and Clean it UP/Green it UP that could use your help
