Dear friends -
I wanted to let you know about the most recent critical issues
surrounding the paving of Guanella Pass - AND ask for your help. (I know
many of you may have written letters in the past, but your help is
needed again.)
In a nutshell, the Fed Hwy Admin (FHWA) proposed 5 alternatives to pave,
reconstruct and/or change the footprint of this rustic, rural scenic
byway. The public input said a loud "NO" to 4 of the 5 proposals that
included light to full construction. Instead of going to Alternative #1
(no major change - just rehabilitate and maintain it) the FHWA has now
come up with Alternative #6.
Yes, you guessed it...it does include light to full construction
(depending on the section of the road.)
So, the people on the Georgetown and Grant sides are both organizing to
oppose the issue, but they need more support- especially since this has
hit during the holidays.
I have attached a letter below in this email that you can print out, sign and send to oppose the paving/reconstruction - or write your own with this base.
TIME IS CRITICAL - JANUARY 16TH is the cutoff for public input. The letter should be mailed to both the Clear Creek County Commissioners as well as the Park County Commissioners.
If you don't have time to do the letter, would you at least forward this
email to anyone you know who has ever taken a hike in Colorado? ;-)
We need the exposure and public input in a short time.
To familiarize yourself with the issue, the following web site gives
some background and links to the FHWA etc.

Thank you! The FHWA will move ahead with Alternative #6 unless the County Commissioners hear from enough of the public and vote against it.

Here is the text of the letter:
Dear County Commissioners,
I am writing you to state my opposition to Alternative 6, which is being
proposed for Guanella Pass. I strongly oppose all of the FHWA
construction alternatives including alternative 6. The only acceptable
alternative must consist of the following items. The original road area
must remain in its current footprint. No heavy construction, blasting,
or construction materials hauling will be permitted up either side of
the pass. The project must only focus on repairing existing surface
type and fixing drainage and erosion problems. Any project must only be
classified as a rehabilitation project. Finally, any damage to private
property owners in both Park County and Clear Creek County must be
compensated by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
I believe that Alternative 6 did not respond to the extensive previous
citizen input, which specifically called for no light or full
construction, but rather, called for rehabilitation of the current
footprint.
Sincerely,
and my address is the following:
