HISTORY:
The Schoolcraft Improvement Association, Inc., was organized in 1992. A small group of resident's from surrounding local block clubs decided to expand beyond just their individual street and join together and address same concern's for their neighborhood. The S.I.A. was incorporated by the State of Michigan on July 22, 1992.
The organization holds a seat on the Detroit Police Dept- 6th Precinct Community Relations Council, Northwest Community Citizens Council and the Grandmont-Rosedale Development Corporation Board.
The S.I.A. participates in annual Detroit City-wide activities such as, Clean-Sweep, Angels Night-Out, Police Appreciation Week, Lights-On and many other city initiatives. We are partnershipped with Dossin Elementary School and a fine principal in Margaret Sanford.
The accomplishments over the years include scholarships to graduating high school students (6 students currently at U of M, Eastearn Mich, Michigan State and Kettering University-Flint), Home Repair Funding to homeowners in need ($50,000 over-the-years), kids fun-day.
MISSION:
The SIA Mission is to engage in the preservation for the quality of life in Detroit with a special emphasis on the community within it's borders. The S.I.A promotes community control of efforts to preserve and enhance the physical environment and historical characteristics of this community including the houses, commercial buildings, vacant land and parks.
LEADERSHIP:
The importance of leadership is never more evident than with this group. Without the commitment of each of these leaders the S.I.A. would mean nothing. Maurice Jones, President and Keith Williams of Abington Block Club (BC), Lawrence Washington and Patricia Marshall (Archdale), Gerald Steger, Joe Dickerson and Cecil Felton (Rutland), Cliff Boynton (Memorial), Barbara Walton (Asbury Park), Eugene Whiteley (Woodmont Recently made his transition), Leon Thomas (St.Marys), Cassandra Underwood (Mettetal), Brent King, (Longacre) and all the many volunteers who take the time to do the many things necessary to make our community a better place to live because of "Neighbors That Care." I applaud you all!!
Moving forward and seeking volunteers interested in making their neighborhood a better place to live.
