THE SHINGLE CREEK NEIGHBORHOOD
The Shingle Creek Neighborhood is a stable, well-maintained neighborhood in the Camden area of north Minneapolis, with generally high quality housing stock. Maintaining and, in some cases, improving the appearance and structural integrity of the housing is a paramount interest of the residents. Attracting new home owners to the neighborhood, providing a range of housing options for all ages and needs, and sustaining a community spirit is an investment in the future of the neighborhood. It is important to encourage high quality housing, ample green space and neighborhood livability.
SHINGLE CREEK NRP HOME IMPROVEMENT LOANS AVAILABLE AT LOW OR NO INTEREST
Shingle Creek property owners are eligible for low or no interest rates for home improvement loans through the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) Home Improvement Loan Program.
These funds are available right now. The maximum loan amount is $10,000; minimum is $1,000. For projects with matching dollars, the interest rate is 0% (e.g., your project costs $4,000 and you come up with $2,000). For fully financed loans (non-matched), the interest rate is 4%, well below market rates. Loan term is up to five years, depending upon the amount borrowed.
The Center for Energy and Environment (CEE) is the agent for this program. You may call Jim Hasnik, CEE, 612-335-5885 if you want an application or more information.
PUBLIC WORKS PROJECTS
Significant neighborhood improvement projects are underway in our neighborhood. The Shingle Creek Pond project is a joint venture of Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center which will provide a storm water detention pond to cleanse runoff before entering Shingle Creek and the Mississippi River. It also will be a new water amenity in our community, located between 52nd and 53rd Avenues North near Thomas Avenue.
The second project is the Humboldt Greenway project, an investment in housing, greenspace and bike/pedestrian paths which will also connect other community elements such as schools and existing parks.
The North Mississippi Regional Park and a new combined community center/library is being planned for Webber Park.
These projects indicate a commitment to improving the Camden area to keep it a highly desirable residential community.
