Our community is centrally located to key areas in Memphis. In less than three minutes the interstate is accessible from three different directions. Our community is approximately five minutes from the airport and, Elvis Presleys' Mansion a major tourist attraction, twenty minutes to Tunica, Ms Casino. We are also privy to an African American Historic Sight, that has not been registered as of today.
July 30,1979 a group of concerned citizens organized the Sixty Point One Ward Civic Club, and incorporated as a non profit. The boundaries were Person to Brooks Rd between Elvis Presley Blvd and Hernando Rd. They organized to promote the social welfare of the community,to foster interest in civic affairs while inquiring about civic abuses. They recognized the value in community involvement,
and political activism. They were the unsung heroes blazing a trail against community apathy. They attended city council meetings, signed petitions and were quick to respond to counter productive activity in the neighborhood. They knew their neighbors, the children, the businesses and the problems therein. Some of the outstanding members and officers, are no longer living in the community, are ill or deceased. Kudo's to the vision, for improving the lives of the community members of the 60.1 Ward. Some of our Unsung Heroes are as follows: Mr. Alfred Rudd,Rev. H.O.Kneeland,Rev F. Rodgers, Mrs. A. White, Mrs. A. Fondren, Mrs. P. Hines, Mrs. L.Cain, Attorney L. Moore and C. Lewis. Effective June 16, 2008 the new Sixty Point One Neighborhood Association, was organized, and boundaries are North/South Elliston to Brooks Rd;between Elvis Presley and Hernando Rd.
The re-organization of the Sixty Point One Civic Club was the brain child of Ms. Oma Ward and Mrs. Carnell Rudd. Five decades of community decline was the topic of their discussion. The concensus was that the community was in a transition that, would negatively impact the lives of the existing homeowners. The name Sixty Point One Neighborhood Association is in keeping with the new concept of community involvement. May 10, 2008 a meeting was held and the Ruby Oaks sub division was the topic of discussion. At least ten/three story multi-family 2/3 BR apartment buildings tower over the community, less than 200 feet from a I40 exit. Questions were raised about the safety of the children that will occupy this dwelling, the decline in city services, vacant and abandoned properties, the lack of walkability, sidewalks and curb access for children and the handicapped in wheelchairs, noise and poorly a maintained drainage ditch that is adjacent North and South property owners, establishing a pro-active approach to crime prevention, and seeking opportunites to create a healthy and esthetically pleasing environment, overflow traffic, etc. The 60.1 Ward Civic Club passed a blueprint to the new Sixty Point One Neighborhood Association. May 15, 1980 The 60.1 Ward Civic Club petitioned City Council Members about the same problems, that to date are still problems.
The SixtyPoint1 Neighborhood Association mission statement is that "I can't, You can't, but together we can make a difference." We belive that Concensus building is key to mobilizing our community. Homeowners, renters, landlords, children, rich, poor, and business owners, are key to our success. We all have a stake in the safety, health and welfare of our community. "I can't, you can't, but together we can make a difference"
