The Smoketown Shelby Park Weed & Seed Program has been in existance since July of 1998. Weed & Seed is a four part strategy thats aimed at Weeding out the negative in the community and Seeding in the positive.
The four part Weed & Seed strategy of Law Enforcement, Community Policing, Intervention Prevention Treatment and Neighborhood Restoration, works to support a community as it works towards economic, residential and community growth.
Weed & Seed is a grant program that is funded through the Justice Department's Executive Office for Weed & Seed.
In accordance with the EOWS funds are provided to maintain Safe Havens with in the Community. There are currently two Safe Havens. The Presbyterian Community Center at 701 South Hancock St. and Meyzeek Community School at 828 South Jackson St. These Safe Havens provide a safe drug and violence free place for youth adults and seniors to gather to learn, play and interact as part of the community.
The boundaries for the Smoketown Shelby Park Weed & Seed Site are on the North, Broadway,the East, Beargrass creek and CSX railroad tracks, the South, CSX railroad tracks, and the West, Interstate 65.
The Smoketown Shelby park Weed & Seed Program is governed by a Steering Committee that is made up of residents, business owners within the Site, community groups, Churches, Schools, Community Centers and local government.
These organizations, groups and people work together in order to make sure that the Weed & Seed Programs is meeting the needs of the community.
