Our year end meeting was attended by representatives, members, and residents from the 38106, 38109, and 38116 zip codes as well as City Councilman Edmund Ford, Jr.
Among the subjects discussed were the new educational program we have already begun installing at Southwest Career Technology Center which will give our young people the knowledge and skills they need to compete in an emerging and underserved workforce. The first of it's kind in Tennessee and one of very few in the entire United States, our Geospatial Information Systems course will make our citizens and city in demand.
Geospatial Information Systems are used in everything from Global Positioning Systems in our cars to computers that track pollution and weather. Few people are qualified to enter the workforce at such a young age, but Memphis youth who take this two year course in the eleventh and twelfth grades will be!
We also have an agreement with the University of Tennessee Agriculture Extension Office to partner on installing a community organic garden in Boxtown.
In 2009 we will make many more positive changes in South Memphis in the areas of Workforce, Health, Education, the Economy, and the Environment (WHEEE).
Stay posted to keep up with current news and the difference we are making in our community!
