The Tahoe/Colonial Collaborative for Healthy Children is a grassroots organization formed in 1994 by the Tahoe Park Neighborhood Association (TPNA) and the Colonial Park Arts and Recreation Effort (CARE) to improve the overall health of our children. Our collaborative is made up of neighborhood leaders, parents, youth, business leaders, school personnel, health care workers and church members.

The mission of the Tahoe/Colonial Collaborative for Healthy Children is to: "Make our neighborhood a healthy and safe palce to live where children can ride their bikes and play without worry of harm. It is our hope to provide services and activities that bring adults and children together to create a small-town atmosphere where people greet each other by name and aren''t afraid to walk doen the street after dark. It is not about being in the right neighborhoo. It''s about making the neighborhood right."

Following is a list of Tahoe/Colonial Collaborative Strategies and Services:
1. Hold Activities and Programs for Children and Families
- Sponsor Agricultural Day
- Offer Parent/Child Playgroups
- Sponsor Annual Health and Safety Fair
- Offer Dental Sealant Program at Local Schools
- Join Healthy Families Initiative
- Obtain Healthy Start Funding for Tahoe Elementary

2. Expand Existing Mentoring Programs
- Include Health and Safety Component in Existing Program
- Develop a New Mentoring Program at Methodist Church

3. Develop and Expand Tools to Communicate With Community
- Sponsor a Community Newsletter
- Develop a Web Page
- Work to Increase Volunteerism
- Develop Family Resource Guide

4. Work to Integrate Collaborative Goals and Strategies With Existing Services and Programs
- Create a Quarterly Roundtable of Potential Partners
- Create a Violent Offenders Task Force
- Create a Family Resource and Neighborhood Center

5. Implement Projects That Beautify, Create Traffic Safety, and Promote Economic Development
- Implement a Community Garden
- Create Community Gateway
- Create Traffic Safety and Economic Development Plan

Many of the activities of the Tahoe/Colonial Collaborative are offered on an annual basis. All of the above listed strategies and activities have either been developed or are scheduled to be underway by the end of 1999. Thousands of hours of volunteer time have been utilized in fulfilling these goals.

About our association

What Is the Tahoe/Colonial Collaborative for Healthy Children?

The Tahoe/Colonial Collaborative for Healthy Children (TCC) is a grassroots, community-based nonprofit dedicated to improving the health, safety and overall well-being of children and families in the Tahoe Park and Colonial Park areas of southeast Sacramento, California.

What Does TCC Do?

A better question might be, "what DOESN'T TCC do?"
The Collaborative was designed to be a solution for concerned parents, neighbors, educators, businesspersons and other community members, so we are a responsive organization - when we are made aware of a need in the community, we work to fulfill it.

The focus of the Collaborative has been on improving children and families' health and safety, and in order to do this, we've gone through assessing, planning and implementation phases:

-Focus Groups and Key Interviews when we began in 1995
-Community surveys in 1995, 1997, 1999 and again in 2003
-Annual Evaluation Reports to assess how we're doing
