The Algiers Courthouse stands on the site of one of the first plantation homes in Algiers and is the center of civic life in this part of New Orleans. Directly across the Mississippi River from Jackson Square, it is the notable landmark of Algiers viewed from the French Quarter. Built in 1896 to replace the plantation home burned in the Great Algiers Fire of 1895, the Courthouse is the architectural and historic ''heart'' of the Algiers Point National Register Historic District and City of New Orleans Historic District. The present buildings, the main Courthouse and the adjacent Stable, were completed in the Romanesque Revival style. Described by the New Orleans Times-Picayune as ''majestically reigning over the west bank of the Mississippi River, a handsome reminder of a different time,'' the Algiers Courthouse is the third oldest continuously-used courthouse in the State of Louisiana.
Not just a lovely building and architectural landmark, the Courthouse busily serves the public. Owned by the City of New Orleans, the Courthouse houses municipal offices such as the Second City Court, Fifth District Assessor's office and a New Orleans City Council District C office as well as the Orleans Parish Registrar of Voters, the New Orleans Traffic Court Violations Bureau, and a New Orleans Council on Aging lunch program. The Courthouse services are used by residents of the entire city of New Orleans. It is less than two blocks from the Algiers/Canal Street Ferry, making it easily accessible for residents and tourists.
The Friends were organized in 1995 when neighborhood residents were alarmed at vandalism and deterioration at the Courthouse. The Friends are pledged to assist the City of New Orleans in maintaining and restoring the building and grounds as well as encouraging active use by the public. In the past six years the Friends have grown from the 15 original members to a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with over 300 individual and group members. The Friends emphasize hands on volunteer projects such as landscaping and cleanup around the buildings, but are actively involved in raising money to fund projects such as sidewalk repair, painting, and renovation of the Stable as an Algiers Museum. The Algiers Courthouse Classic 5K Walk/Run held on the first Saturday of December each year is our principal fundraiser.
