Algiers is easily reached from the Eastbank by the Algiers/Canal Street Ferry (on foot or by car). During peak commuter hours, two ferry boats run every fiften minutes from the terminals at the foot of Canal Street and at Algiers Point. At other times, one boat leaves Canal Street on the hour and half hour and Algiers on the quarter hours. Operation hours are 5:45 AM to 11:45 PM (from Algiers). The ferry schedule is sometimes affected by weather conditions and river traffic. The ride is free for walking passengers; cars are charged $1 for the round trip.
A ferry has run continuously on this route since 1827. The ferry system in New Orleans is operated by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Crescent City Connection Division.
