2000 5K RACE A SUCCESS FOR FRIENDS

The Algiers Courthouse Classic, held on Saturday, December 2, 2000 was a success in spite of threatening clouds and cold breezes. The fourth annual race to aid The Friends of the Algiers Courthouse raise funds for improvements at the Courthouse fielded 92 entrants. Thanks to great support from the New Orleans Police Department Reserve Unit and Fourth District patrols, the race course was clearly marked and runners enjoyed the cheering courtesy of the Algiers Morning Edition Kiwanis Club. Kiwanians and St. Andrew the Apostle Knights of Columbus members provided the volunteer support in setup, food prep and serving, and clean up. Thanks also go to dedicated Friends volunteers who manned sign-up tables, handed out T-shirts and organized trophies and prizes. EMS services were provided by American Medical Response.

The Algiers Courthouse Classic offers a race course on some of the prettiest streets of Old Algiers and is excellent for families as well as seasoned runners and walkers. Neighbors along the route haul out their lawn chairs and cheer the entrants on. In addition, sponsor donations and entry fees for the three previous races have provided over $14,000 for improvement projects such as the recent sidewalk repairs at the Courthouse.

Thank you, race participants, for your support and enthusiasm! Mark you calendars for our tentative date of The Algiers Courthouse Classic 2001: December 1st.
