Initiated by Robert Salcido of TPD, the Toumey Park NA was reorganized beginning in the spring of 2005. Prevailing concerns of the people attending NA meetings are speeding, safety and park improvements. Work has begun to gather petitions for speed humps and tables. City Council Ward 6 provided funding for an initial installment of speed humps and speed tables near Toumey Park. Ward 6 also raised $65,000 in funding for new park equipment which was installed in early 2007.
The City approved our first transportation mitigation project for 2 speed tables on Eastland St. on the north side of Toumey Park and 3 speed humps on Venice Ave. (between 19th & 20th, 19th & Eastland, Eastland & 18th). The speed humps were installed in January 2006. More are planned as part of an application to Pima County Neighborhood Reinvestment Program.
Following a survey in 2006, extensive work was accomplished by neighborhood committees working on various projects. A Transportation Enhancement Grant was obtained in late 2007 for a pedestrian pathway along Columbus Blvd. from 22nd St. to Timrod. Work is to begin in early 2009.
The Drachman Foundation provided planning for the park to enhance use of the park. This is included in plans for Neighborhood Reinvestment grant.
The Neighborhood Reinvestment grant also includes sidewalks for 16th St. where there are none today and additional speed tables/humps throughout the neighborhood to reduce speeding and discourage "cut-through" traffic. Also included are traffic circles for several intersections.
