There has been far to many accidents at this location.
The traffic control depart has looked into this several times over the years. The resulting comments from the engineer is most if not all the near misses are drivers inattention to their driving surroundings and using wireless devices and poor driving skills to make turns. The accident rates was explained to be less than 1 accident per year over the last 10 years. This statistic sounds low to me but apparently that was all that was recordable.
The latest accident on September 24, 2013 is terrible. One accident is too many. I personally watch my rear mirror just as much as watching my turning conditions. In the past 20 plus years had to stomp on the gas and jerk forward to prevent a potential rear-end accident even though I had signaled far in advance and maintained my brake light. One time all I could see in my rear mirror was smoke from a cement truck locking its brakes behind me, if I hadn't sped up I would not be here today. A signal light in all my near misses would not have made any difference.
I do not know if this accident was a motorcycle but if it was it would seem a visibility problem could also aggravate the circumstances.
