Founded in Kentucky through the initiative and commitment of Louisville-based community members, Wellspring began offering one residential program and rehabilitative services in 1982 to assist adults with mental illness avoid homelessness, reduce hospitalization, and have a life of hope in the community.
Wellspring's services are based on the belief that persons with a psychiatric disability should have the same opportunities for rehabilitation as do persons with a physical disability. In addition, Wellspring helps such persons have safe, decent housing as a base from which to participate in rehabilitation and treatment services.
Wellspring was one of the first community-based housing and residential programs of its kind in the state and has shown steady growth in housing options and services since its inception. In 1983, Wellspring established affiliation with what is now Seven Counties Services, Inc. and in 1989 became a member of the Metro United Way. Through creative and cost effective matching of public and private resources, Wellspring operates 19 housing sites including a crisis stabilization unit, group homes for transitional and supported living, apartments and single-family homes.
Wellspring has been a regional leader in developing innovative residential programs, including opening Kentucky's first residential crisis stabilization unit. The state Department of Mental Health has reviewed Wellspring's housing and services as ''exemplary'' and Wellspring has been cited as a model program in national reviews and professional journals.
Throughout its 19-year history, Wellspring works to provide hope and recovery for persons with mental illness by the following:
* Developed comprehensive ways to meet residential and rehabilitation needs of our clients
* Committed to strengthening community-based resources and treatment for persons with a biochemical disorder of the brain on the same level of justice and opportunity provided to citizens with physical disabilities
* Recognized as an innovative agency in the development of quality, community-based housing
These commitments are important in terms of producing effective and cost efficient programs that enable our clients to rebuild their lives and manage their illnesses instead of being managed by them.
Wellspring meets all criteria as a not-for-profit corporation under section
501(c)(3)of the Internal Revenue Code.
