From the Manager's Desk

Hello Friends

I have been trying to get back on track with our newsletter coming out the first of the month rather than the middle of the month. I apologize for that inconvenience. Our move back into the manager's quarters was not, shall we say, a very pleasant experience. I should have taken time off, but didn't - therefore I spread myself a little thin. Anyway we are back in and almost settled - just minor things left to do and it certainly is a joy. For the first time since we have lived here, I can say, we are now unpacked and can enjoy our home.

The pool is open and has been since about May 7th. Many of you have been out there on a regular basis already. The hours of the pool are from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M.
We would like to leave it open on Friday and Saturday nights until 10:00 P.M. We will try it and see how it goes, however if we don't get a sufficient amount of swimmers, meaning more than one or two, after 9:00 we will continue to close at nine. So all you swimmers who love to swim late, give it a try. Remember the hour of 10:00 will only be on Friday and Saturday nights, not during the week.

I have been working with Waste Management on our disabled list and recycling. As most of you know all mobile home parks in the City of Sacramento have to have a recycling program in place by July 1, 2000. There will be many options the park can choose from on how we will be recycling and you will be notified in plenty of time. The recycling programs have an expense to them, therefore the Management Company will make the decision of which program we will be using. I have also requested from them that we will be able to dispose of our XMAS trees in one spot and they will pick them up. They agreed we could be a part of the program. I will be checking back to confirm at the end of December.

Waste Management has also asked me to work with them on the disabled list and return pick-ups. Waste Management comes out without a charge if the driver failed to pick up the garbage. However, if the driver did not pick it up because of an automobile being in the way or some other obstacle they will return one time to pick it up without a charge. The second time there is a charge of $23.00. This also applies to the disabled. So let's make sure nothing is in the way for the driver. Also attached to the newsletter is a form for your doctor to sign if you are disabled. Please fill one out if you haven't already done so. Be sure and have your doctor sign before you send it in. Thank you.

A friendly reminder: Please, there is no mechanical work to be done on your car in the driveway. The only things you are allowed to do are brief tasks such as changing tires or batteries. We are going to be firm on this rule. We are seeing more and more cars being worked on as we pass by. If everyone does it, before your know it we will have cars on jacks or half taken apart and our park will no longer look as nice as it does. Please keep this in mind. Most of our residents are very willing to take their cars out to be repaired, as they too don't want the park to look "junky". If you have a problem with your car, you will have to take it elsewhere to work on it. Thank you.

I feel everyone in the park should know that on Saturday May 20th or early Sunday morning we had a total of 4 cars broken into that I know of. We all need to be aware of when something like this happens in order for us to be more diligent about locking up our homes and cars. Be sure and lock up anything you don't want to lose including your bicycles. Please if you see someone at night that you know does not belong in this park and they are "snooping" around, call 911. The police will come out if you call. It is better to call at the time rather than after the fact. If you see someone in the daytime that you are not sure of, don't hesitate to ask if you can help him or her. If we don't know someone we ask. Most people are not offended. Many we have to escort out of the park because they do not belong here.

Fat-Free Breakfast Potatoes

2 potatoes, sliced
1 c. water
1 green onion, chopped
1 beef bouillon cube

Bring water to boil. Add bouillon cube and dissolve. Add onions and sliced potatoes, cooking until potatoes are just tender and most of water is boiled away. This recipe makes its own "gravy".

Caring Neighborhood

Many of our seniors in the Park wish to remain as independent as possible and would like to live in their mobile home as long as they want. In some instances they need a little help. They sometimes have immediate family checking on them regularly, sometimes they do not. How well do you know your neighbor? Is your neighbor a senior who you can befriend? You may want to invite along your senior neighbor who does not drive when you go to the grocery store. Perhaps you can make a simple house repair if they are disabled. Maybe you can boost their moral by simply visiting and talking with them occasionally.

I hope everyone is enjoying our spring with a little sprinkle here and there and a few warm days. I watched a special weather report last week and they said we are going to have a hot summer. We will see what happens. One thing I have learned about our weather reports is they are not always right. I choose to wake up in the morning and see what type of day it is going to be. It is more challenging that way.

I want to thank those of you who have taken advantage of using the large dumpster. We sure fill it fast. It is nice to get rid of those "things" that clutter our yards etc. It is amazing how fast we collect. I am thinking I might bring one in for fall clean up but I would only be able to fill it the one time. If you feel this would be a good idea please let me know.

I have a few reminders:

1. Please remember your watering days and most of all please do not wash down the street and driveways. The park does not need to be fined. The fine will be passed on to the resident who defies the City Ordinance. Remember that Code Enforcement is right next door to us.

2. There is absolutely no washing cars in the driveways. The car wash is by the laundry room and it is much more convenient to do it there.

3. It is up to the resident to tell your guests there is no street parking. Please when guests arrive ask them where they have parked and remind them to park up front. Also remind your guests to drive slowly through here.

4. Our owners drive through the park often. Please keep your yards looking nice. Our park is an old park, but it still looks nice and we do get many compliments on how clean it is. It is nice to tell those who apply for residency just how much pride the people here have in their homes and park because it does show. Thank you.

The person who was going to head the committee for planning activities is unable to do so. Is there someone else that would like to do this? I know those of you who did sign up to be on the committee were looking forward to participating. I feel this is the only way we can expect to get a few activities going. We just need one person to be in charge, and call the meetings. Anyone interested? Give me a call.

From the Manager's Desk

This is truly a beautiful time of the year with all the blossoms and everything beginning to take on new life. Our winter ended with a lot of rain and I am looking forward to a beautiful spring and fun summer.

Let's get ready for spring-cleanup! We will be bringing in a large dumpster, like we did last year toward the end of April. Let's make a huge effort to clean up the "extra items" lying around our porches and yards. Our patio areas are not to be used for extra furniture, etc. The only items that belong on our patios are outdoor furniture, which includes pots for planting, etc. This is in the rules. Please no overstuffed chairs packed boxes, etc outside. It looks very unsightly! We get many compliments on how nice and clean our park is. The owners would like to keep it that way and I am sure most of us agree.

Most of you are aware you are responsible for your own trees. I have said before if you would like to remove your mulberry tree and not wait for the park to do it, you must get permission from management first. You must take the tree down to the level of the ground and you are responsible for hauling the tree off. The stump can be removed later when all the stumps are removed at the same time.

Those of you who are disabled and your weekly garbage is taken care of by the garbage service, please do not allow anyone to take your can out for you. This confuses the garbage service. I appreciate the kind neighbors who like to help, but it causes more problems and some of the disabled are left without garbage pickup or their cans are not brought back in. So please be kind neighbors, check with those you like to help and make sure that they are not on the disabled list before you take the can out. Thank you.

Street Parking: The problems we have with street parking should not really be an issue. I will remind you once again. Repair service may, of course, park in front of your home and you may load and unload in front of your home but you are not to have your guest unload and then visit inside. The usual comment we get is "It was only for five minutes." It might only seem five minutes to you and your guest, however we have timed many guests for over an hour. It doesn't matter. If your guests are going to visit please have them park in the guest parking or in your driveway. The five minutes could be a matter of saving one's life. The emergency vehicles are in our park frequently. Please be considerate of others. We have many people in this park that are seriously ill and can require immediate medical attention at any given time.

Vacant Space Parking: The vacant lots are not to be parked in. This is at the owner's request. All of our vacant spaces are equipped to take RV's. And we never know when one will come in. Also if everyone decided to park on a vacant lot it would look very unsightly and look like a used car lot. Please once again do not take it upon yourself to park on a vacant space. Thank you.

Recipe

TEXAS GRITS

11/2 c. grits 1 lb. Velveeta cheese
6 c. water 1/2 tsp. Tabasco sauce
1 1/2 tsp. salt 4 eggs
1 1/2 cubes butter

Bring grits, water, and salt to boil. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add butter. Cut cheese in small squares. Add to grits. Stir to melt. Add Tabasco sauce. Beat eggs, one at a time, with an electric mixer until very foamy. Fold eggs into grits mixture. Bake in greased 15x10 inch casserole pan at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Good hot or cold.

Fitness Tip

The best exercise is one for your heart and lungs. Your heart rate should beat at a certain rate in order to get it in shape. This heart rate can be figured as follows. First, take your age and subtract it from 220 to get your maximum heart rate. Second, multiply that number by 0.7 to obtain your target heart rate. It will be harder to hit this target heart rate as your heart gets into shape.

Household Tip

To treat a waxy or greasy stain such as cooking oil or butter, try to absorb as much as possible by applying cornstarch or talcum powder. Rubbing shampoo into the remaining stain can help, and then wash the fabric in the hottest possible water.

A lawn should be aerated every 2-3 years in either the spring or fall in order to allow air for the roots. Leave the plugs on the lawn. A thin layer of sand or organic mulch should be applied to the lawn. Water.

Pet Tip

If you have a pet bird, take special care when finding a location for the cage. The best location is either the family room or living room, but at least 10 feet from the television. Avoid especially the kitchen, bathroom, a window or door to the outside,
and any heating or air conditioning vent. Also be careful not to move the cage too often.

Caring Neighborhood

The City of Sacramento is sponsoring a meeting at the Woodlake Park clubhouse concerning the needs of senior citizens in our neighborhood. The meeting is scheduled for 1:30 P.M. on Thursday, March 16.
Please come to this informative event.
Block Sale

Baxter & Globe's spring block sale will be held on Friday, April 7, and Saturday, April 8, from 9 AM to 5 PM. These are the two blocks behind the park (out the back gate). Easter items will be featured as well as other miscellaneous "finds". If you would like to set up a table along Edgewater - call Judy, 929-1662, by April 1 (no fooling). If not, come shop!!!! (If it rains, the block sale will be held as the same time & days, but on the following week.)

Baxter & Globe's spring block sale will be held on Friday, April 7, and Saturday, April 8, from 9 AM to 5 PM. These are the two blocks behind the park (out the back gate). Easter items will be featured as well as other miscellaneous "finds". Come shop!!!! (If it rains, the block sale will be held as the same time & days, but on the following week.)
