The Wyandotte Youth Assistance Program is a community based program sponsored by the City of Wyandotte with some additional funding through Wayne County Department of Child and Family Services,the Michigan Office of Juvenile Justice - FIA grants, and local community organizations' contributions. This juvenile diversion program serves not just as an intervention for youth ages 7-16, but also as a prevention program. All services are free and open to Wyandotte residents. Depending on need and availability, services may include one-to-one mentoring, life skills peer groups, counseling, parenting workshops/support, referrals for outside therapy/treatment, recreational activities, prison visit, court observation, field trips, or tutoring help.
Wyandotte youths ages 7-16 who are having problems such as:
* School or home truancy
* Change in residence/school
* Drug/Alcohol use
* Behavior problems
* Family conflicts
* Dealing with grief/loss
* First misdemeanor, felony
Youths are referred to us through the schools, police, juvenile court, agencies, parents, or by the youth themselves.
Adult volunteers are always needed! If you or someone you know is willing to make a commitment to the program by sharing with a kid only an hour or so once a week for approximately six months,give us a call. Learn about being a mentor to a youth. All mentors who meet the screening requirements and qualifications will be provided with free training. Such a small time out to make such a big difference in someone's life! Must be at least 21 yrs. old, a caring and concerned citizen, a good listener, no police record, good driving record, be responsible and reliable.
