Akosua Hobert is a retired teacher. She taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 30 years. She is actively involved in a number of civic organizations: Good Neighbors of 84th Block Club president, and is a member of Strategic Concepts in Organizing & Policy Education (SCOPE). She is the founder of Friends of Riba (a non-profit organization to promote literacy at Riba Primary School, South Africa).
In the past, as a member of the Pan African Secretariat, she worked very hard to end apartheid in South Africa. She also conducted the Fahamu Tutorial/Cultural program on Saturdays for ten years at the Dunbar Hotel on Central Avenue in Los Angeles. She served on the African American Education Commission. (LAUSD) She was actively involved with Coalition Against Police Abuse (CAPA), Urbanetwork, Kwanzaa People of Colour, Patrice Lumumba Coalition, and the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA).
Ms. Hobert has traveled extensively in Africa where she visited Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Egypt, and the Seychelles. In 1981 she lived in Tanzania, East Africa for one year teaching second grade at the International School of Tanganyika.
Currently Ms. Hobert is an active board member and secretary of African American Firefighter Museum. She is committed to the goals and objectives of the museum and plans to make every effort to promote the history of African Americans in the fire service.
