I moved to Gaylord Street in September 1975; one of nine buyers reclaiming the block as a single family, residential street. The original group of nine individual buyers established covenants to ensure that we all adheared to a concept of renovation, and mutual support to ward off the encroachment of high rise development which had begun to surround Cheesman Park.
The covenants had the effect of creating restrictions similar to R-2 zoning and an obstacle to sale of a property without a right of first refusal by all nine buyers. A year later we were successful in formally down zoning to R-2 Gaylord and the adjacent blocks of Vine, Race, and Josephine Streets for the 1100 and 1200 blocks.
