The late Michael Smith of San Francisco desired to create a way for black and white men interested in cross cultural relationships to meet. His plan was to start an organization that would serve as a meeting point to foster these relationships. In 1980, he placed an ad in The Advocate and San Francisco, Chicago, Kansas City, New York and Boston responded by establishing local chapters of Black and White Men Together (BWMT).
