City Year is designed as an 'action tank' for national service. From a 50 member summer pilot program in 1988, City Year has grown to over 1,000 corps members in fourteen cities nationwide. City Year brings together young adults, ages 17 to 24, from diverse ethnic, cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds for a demanding year of full-time community service, leadership development, and civic engagement. United in their desire to serve, their diversity, and the power of a young generation, these young leaders invest their talents and energy to critically engage their communities to solve real problems and make a positive difference in others' lives. City Year corps members serve by promoting the leadership development of children. Teams of corps members have a variety of service opportunities from teaching social issues curricula on topics such as HIV/AIDS and domestic violence prevention, to running after school programs, organizing and leading out-of-school initiatives such as Camp City Year and Young Heroes (a service-learning corps for young adolescent students).
