About our association

Corpus Christi Barrios Association Purpose

The Corpus Christi Barrios Association is a grass-roots community organization and a general purpose committee that advocates for neighborhood improvements. Our improvement areas include physical infrastructure development (streets, curbs, gutters, affordable housing, etc.) and human development infrastructure (early childhood/ early brain development, community schools, neighborhood associations’ creation, recruitment, and block captains’ program, etc.). Our commitment to affordable housing, neighborhood revitalization, community schools, and livable/ learning communities is our comprehensive approach to “Leave No Neighborhood Behind”.

Lobbying Agenda- 2004
· Encourage the establishment of Neighborhood Associations, Councils, Representatives, and/or Advocate/Lobbyists from and for the Elementary School Communities
· Increase CC Barrios Membership and Block Captains
· Partner and assist the American GI Forum Foundation to built the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Historical and Educational Center by the 10th Anniversary of his death in 2006. The Museum would be located at his old medical offices on Morgan and Bright Streets.
· Endorse and advocate for Infill Affordable Housing and that federal, state, and city affordable housing funds adhere to our "Land Acquisition with Infrastructure First" recommendation.
· Endorse and advocate for a City of Corpus Christi Tree Ordinance.
· Endorse and advocate for Saving the Memorial Coliseum and Memorializing Other Great Corpus Christi Citizens at that site.
· Endorse and advocate the proposed Pvt. Felix Longoria U.S. Post Office in Three Rivers, Texas.
· Endorse and advocate for Voter Education and Registration and GET OUT THE VOTE campaigns for the upcoming November elections
· Partner with the Citizens for Educational Excellence for Community Schools with school linked/school based services and better utilization of public facilities and consolidation of services.
· Partner with the Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi University Outreach Economic Development Council to expand economic and empowerment opportunities to communities in the Renewal Community zone, the Northside, and Westside of Corpus Christi.
· Endorse and advocate for Early Childhood/Early Brain Development Best Practices' Awareness and Importance
· Endorse and advocate for the City Council to place all the Charter Revision Commission propositions on the November ballot and let the voters decide.
· Endorse and advocate that Nueces County maintain and expand if possible the highly needed City/County Health Dept. services and employees.
· Endorse and advocate for the City to expand the Neighborhood Initiative Program from 5 neighborhoods to 10 for 2004-05.

Block Captain Duties

PURPOSE

“The purpose of this Association shall be to provide a forum and
voice for the Community, and to protect and promote the mutual
interests and welfare of the residents of Corpus Christi Barrios/
Neighborhoods.”... CCBA CONSTITUTION

BLOCK CAPTAIN DUTIES

• Serve as the contact or liaison for his/her neighbors and the Association and/or other decision-making groups
• Survey the block neighbors on their concerns, needs, and improvements
• Recruit Association new members and block captains
• Distribute informational flyers, notices, etc. to the block neighbors
• Advocate for neighborhood improvements, Association
goals, objectives, Get Out The Vote (GOTV), etc.
