HELP US SAVE HISTORIC GLASGOW!

The Friends of Historic Glasgow is an organization of concerned citizens devoted to the cause of preserving the Glasgow, Delaware area's dwindling natural and historic resources.

Glasgow is historically significant as the staging ground for Delaware's only Revolutionary War battle, which occurred at nearby Cooch's Bridge. The area contains several unique properties that reflect the rich history of not only Glasgow, but of New Castle County and the State of Delaware.

PROPERTIES NOW THREATENED:

1) La Grange, the historic Barczewski farm and home on the north side of Route 40, just west of Route 896.

A developer, Stephen J. Nichols in Glasgow, DE, purchased the La Grange / Barczewski farm on November 10, 2005, so that 232 houses, a 1.74 acres church parking lot, and a 12.09 acres strip mall could be built. Christina School District has expressed interest in the remaining 48 acres of the farm and the historic manor house and granary, so they can build an elementary school.

This property contains 11 documented prehistoric Native American Indian sites, earthen trenches from the British occupation of Aikentown (Glasgow's former name) in 1777, the last remaining section in the state of DE of an 18th century road, a remnant of the B. H. Latrobe feeder canal from 1804, and several structures from 1815 on the National Register of Historic Places. General Marquis de Lafayette named this farm while a visitor there in 1824. In 1982, a New Castle County historic zoning overlay was placed over the entire 236 acres of the farm. The Barczewski farm is one of the crown jewels of the Glasgow Historic Area and the State of Delaware. The farm is constantly under threat of development.

THE DEVELOPER IS SEEKING A COMMERCIAL RE-ZONING FOR THE STRIP MALL ACREAGE, OVER THE OBJECTIONS OF THE NEW CASTLE COUNTY HISTORIC REVIEW BOARD. COUNCILMAN DAVID TACKETT HAS INTRODUCED THE ZONING CHANGE ORDINANCE.

2) The colonial Middleton-Brooks' house from 1787 and property on the northwest corner of Route 40 West and Glasgow Avenue, adjacent to the La Grange farm. The New Castle County Historic Review Board and County Council, along with the Friends of Historic Glasgow, were successful in our joint efforts to obtain an historic zoning overlay for this property.

2) CONTACT YOUR COUNTY COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE AND TELL HIM OR HER YOU ARE OPPOSED TO THE LA GRANGE RE-ZONING. TELL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE SUCH A RE-ZONING IS IMPROPER WITHOUT THE HISTORIC REVIEW BOARD'S APPROVAL.
