Why "Warm Up Louisville"? Why not actually anyone that reads this and is in another state should start their own project. It’s not hard. You just have to have the want to help someone. You don’t even have to know how to Knit or Crochet.
I started this Project because I was watching TV one night. The News was on, we had just had a 5 inch fall of snow and they were calling for more. I know that's not much snow, but in a city that only saw less than 9 inches in one year that was huge for us, and that was last year. Schools were closed, jobs were letting out early and people were hitting the stores and filling up on food like it was the end of days. But the News Reporter was talking about how the different shelters were sending out vans to pick up the homeless in the area to bring them in from the cold. But the Reporter, however went on to highlight the fact that a larger part of the homeless refused to come in from the cold weather.
Why they don't come in is hard to say. Some don't think right any more and can't work out what is good for them, mental illness is a dangerous thing and kills many homeless every year. Some are afraid they will lose their belongings. There are just as many reasons as there are people. In any case. they generally don't have good clothing like you and I have. So I am sitting here and I had just got done making myself my very first Crochet hat. I am disabled and felt that the least I could do was make some hats and scarfs for some homeless people.
Then the idea grew in my head. The 5 or 6 hats and scarfs I could make would be a nice token gift, but what would it really do. Then I started thinking, I know I had God behind me and He would bless my idea and help give me the tools to pull of my new revised idea. I had a new goal. I wanted 1,000 hats and scarfs for Louisville Homeless by October 2008, and I wanted to present them to the Director of the 'Coalition of the Homeless' Marlene Gordon. At the beginning of that month.
That's where everyone that comes to this site comes in. Now I need your help. I need people to donate their time either doing one of the many things below to help me reach this goal.
1) Knitting hats and scarfs your self and sending them to me. Knit or Crochet, any style, color and texture. As many or little as you can.
2) Since winter is coming to an end go to clearance sales and buy Knit hats and scarfs and maybe gloves if they are under a dollar. If you can only afford a dollar store hat that would be great. Every hat and scarf will find a home. I know not everyone can Crochet or Knit so if you want to buy them that is great to.
3) If you have a business that has Hats and Scarfs donate them and they will be mentioned on this website and the day of Presentation when the News channels show up for the event your company name will be on the flyer given out. All donor names will be listed.
4) If you wish to donate to the project and other activities. Please go to www.Paypal.com and make a donation to this email address catcunningham6@bellsouth.net If you have any questions call 502-447-0053.
Well that's my second mission at this time and I know I will get it done. Please feel free to contact me. I am doing all I can. Althought I have been in the hospital 3 times this year already for a total of 16 days. Even though I am sick I refuse to stop working on this Project. I have brought every time I have gone in to the hospital. It helps me spread the word because people ask what am I making.
So to everyone that reads this thank you for taking the time. I hope you make the choice to help me in my goal.
Have a Blessed Day,
Catherine Cunningham
