Youth and Strings

The Hartwell and Neighbors Community Center would like to implement a Youth and Strings Program. This program would provide Activities in the Fine Arts, more specifically the implementation of a Violin program for Youth. Students from Monnier Elementary School and the surrounding community would have an opportunity to experience violin lessons several nights per week and culminate the experience violin with a community performance.

Currently, the students are not involved in an After School Program with a focus on the fine Arts and this would be an enriching activity for the students during a time period in which the students should be focused on the positive.

Out target population would be approximately ten (10%) of the student population at Monnier Elementary School, which would equate to approxi- mately forty seven to fifty(47-50)Students.The entire school is identified as Title 1,therefore the students are at risk and an enrichment program is appropriate.

The program would include instructors involving the students in small group instruction with a hands on approach. Classical and contemporary selections will be explored and room for individual creativity will be encouraged. Field
trips to classical concerts will also be developed for additional reinforcement of skills.

With the implementation of this program our youth can strive to be enrichment through the fine arts and meet the needs of the entire child, including the creative elements as well as the academic.

About our association

Hartwell And Neighbors Association

The Hartwell and Neighbor Association was organized in April 1987.We organized to help
bring some solutions to the problems that our neighborhood was facing, and to help restore our community to some semblance of what it one was, by applying for a NOF grant for minor home repair
to low- moderate income families. Our community was beset by crime, unemployment and substance abuse.

Membership Requirements: Membership is open to all persons committed to the purposes of the organization. All applications for membership signifying their familarity with and willingness
to cooperate towards the purposes of Hartwell And Neighbors Association, shall be accepted by the
Secretary, and approved by the Board of Directors.

The organization works collaboratively with neighborhood leaders,community-based organizations
schools, businesses and others who are interested
in creating and maintaining viable and stable communities. The organization works in conjunction
with other organizations to organize and implement
programs and projects; help solve city-wide
problems and to share information.Projects include Toys For Tots,Community Fairs,paint-up
fication/clean-up projects, community forum meetings and community patrols. These projects are coordinated and monitored by the Board of Directors of Hartwell and Neighbors Association.

The organization has establlished a Community Resource Center. The Resource/Referral Service acts as a liason between major institutions
and community based organizations in making individuals more aware of available community and government resources that can assist with their needs,i.e;housing resources, social service
grams, counseling for domestic abuse and or
violence,youth/tutorial assistance, senior citizen information and alcohol or drug rehab.
treatment centers referral.

Donation of Building

The Hartwell And Neighbors Association is the recepient of a building, donated by the family of one of the business owners located within our community. The building will house all of our programs and will be called "The Hartwell And
Neighbors Association Child and Family Center".
We are seeking donations to aid us in this effort. The building needs rehabilitiation in order to offer some of the programs that we have proposed,Food and Friendship for our senior and homeless, tutorial for our children and adults.
literacy classes,health clinic, etc.
Our theme is "The men/women who try to do something and fail are infintely better than those who try to do nothing and succeed".L.Jones

Redevelopment

This community is in need of redevelopment. There are blocks that only have 2 or 3 houses on them. blight and homes in disrepair is prevalent in the
neighborhood. Slum landlords, who have a disregard for the safety of the citizens who have lived here for over thirty years, rent to any one that can pay them rent on a monthly basis and then put them out after they can no longer pay. We have neighbors that have lived here and help to keep the neighborhood as stable as it is, and we want to applaud their efforts. We would welcome a developer who would work with us to see our dream come to fruition.

We are proud of our political activism, we have registered hundreds of voters over the years and
we take pride in "getting out the vote" at election time.
