Montgomery County is the home of the only working rotary jail in the United States. The rotary jail was built in 1881 and was an innovation in jail building technology. The two-story circular cellblock is designed to rotate 360 degrees in either a clockwise or counter clockwise direction. A hand crank is used to rotate the approximately 54,000 pound structure.
The rotary jail is located at 225 North Washington Street in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
