The District of Columbia has undertaken a number of neighborhood planning initiatives, but these efforts have traditionally not been coordinated as part of a citywide vision. Citizens have worked hard to improve their communities, yet often feel they received little support from city government.
Government agencies have worked to improve neighborhoods, but have not always responded to the priorities of the community. Over the years, we have worked in good faith for our city, but not in unison.
The mission of Neighborhood Action is to empower citizens to improve their communities by mobilizing and coordinating the resources of government, businesses, nonprofits, the faith community, neighborhood leaders, and citizens themselves.
Through neighborhood input collected at the Neighborhood Action Citizen Summit on November 20, 1999, the following priorities were determined for Custer 4, Georgetown & Burleigh/Hillandale:
Transportation: A traffic plan that will address congestion from tourist buses and pass through traffic and provide better transportation and parking.
Quality of Life: A higher quality of life in Georgetown & Burleigh/Hillandale. This includes more core consumer services, a reduction in liquor licenses, and fewer property crimes. The ultimate goal is to live in clean, beautiful neighborhoods with well maintained public art.
Making Government Work: Better maintenance of streets and sidewalks, enforcement of all city ordinances (especially housing and zoning codes), better control of personal property crimes (vandalism, auto related), coordination of different government agencies and elimination of duplication. A community coordinator tasked to be a liaison between the residents and government would be ideal. Access to information on ongoing regulatory matters, e.g. ABC, and reduction in liquor licenses is a primary goal.
Unity of Purpose: To develop a relationship with other neighborhoods and organizations and establish collaborative relationships with universities, residents and businesses.
Education and Schools: Dramatic improvements in public schools.
