CREATING NEIGHBORHOOD ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. The Mayor's goal for economic development is to put our strong economy to work in your community. "Economic development means local development-the arms of a strong economy should reach the neighborhoods and communities in a city," said the Mayor. To spur this economic growth:
+ Giant Foods has committed to building a grocery store in Ward 7, East of the River.
+The Newseum is moving to Pennsylvania Avenue, spurring growth in Wards 2 and 6.
+The city is revitalizing Georgia Avenue, creating a corridor of neighborhoods, with strong businesses, improved city services and economic opportunity in Ward 4.
+In conjunction with our local and federal partners, we opened the Georgia Avenue Business Access Center, to serve small and local businesses in Wards 1 and 4.
+We achieved our Scorecard goal of awarding 40% of contracts for the new Convention Center to local businesses. In actuality, we awarded 54% - a total of $173 million.
