Nichols Meadows and Watterson Lake Neighorhood is located in Southern Louisville bounded by Berry Blvd. to the north, Taylor Blvd. to the east, the Watterson Expressway to the south, and Seventh St. and the Illinois Central Railrod tracks to the west.
The Starks realty Co. Began to develop the area then know as "JACOBS" Addition in 1892 after the opening of nearby Jacob's Park (modern-day Iroquois Park).
During The World War I and WWII the neighborhood was sites for "NICHOLS" Army Hospital (now known as Veterans Administration Hospital) and Waverly Hills Sanatorium. Waverly Hills closed in 1961. In 1971 Urban Renewal was used by the city to clear the sites and set for residential development. Shortly after, at the intersection of Manslick Rd. and March Blvd., became the site of a large park with fishing "WATTERSON" lake, high-rise elderly housing, and a new signle-faimily housing develpment.
The Nichols Meadow and Wheatmore on the Lake Subdivisions are fairly new and was not built until around 1994.
Watterson Lake (fishing) Park,11 acres located on South Wheatmore Drive. Manslick Cemetary, a burial site for indigents dating from the 1970s. The city Animal Control and Protection Center.
Nichols Meadow Wheatmore on the Lake Neighborhood Association, Inc. referred to as NMWLNA is organized and incorporated under and by virtue of the laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
1. To promote the economic and social interest of the neighborhood;
2. To act on behalf of members in matters involving their needs as related to the neighborhood;
3. To afford opportunity for expression and interchange of opinions of special interest to all members;
4. To aid and support worthy legislation and community efforts to improve the neighborhood;
5. To work with local government and similar agencies in promoting the neighborhood;
6. To educate residents and the community at large on issues of concern to the neighborhood.
The Nichols Meadow subdivision is defined as that area bounded between Manslick Road and March Boulevard, inclcuding Nichols Meadow Circle and Pikeview Court and including the homes and apartments bounded between East, West, North, South Wheatmore Drive and including Closterworth Lane.
Membership is open to any person eighteen (18) years of age or older living within the defined boundaries.
NMWLNA meetings are held monthly at times and location designated by the Board of Directors. Flyers are sent out to neighborhood residents to inform of meeting agenda, date, time and location. To request a copy of the minutes from past NMWLNA meeting(s), you may notify by email, telephone or mail.
