The Rozelle-Annesdale neighborhood is part of the land purchased by Solomon Rozelle in 1830. His land extended from Union Ave. on the north to S. Parkway on the south, and from Hollywood on the east to Bellevue on the west. This contained most of today's Midtown Memphis. He built his home near the intersection of Pigeon Roost Road (Lamar Ave.) and the Memphis & Charleston Railroad (Norfolk Southern). His family established homes nearby, and all were prominent in local political and civic affairs.
One of the early settlers in the area was Eli Rayner who purchased land near present day Rayner St. and built his home there in 1853. His daughter Irene married Thomas Turley, a prominent attorney and politician who was elected to the Tennessee Supreme Court. The home still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
